Directions:
Fill in the blanks with the correct word or group of words from the alternatives given below each sentence.
He was allowed to sleep ________ he had finished his homework.
Answer: (b)
Both 'till' and 'while' do not fit in the context of the meaning sought to be conveyed in the given sentence; (a) will be grammatically incorrect.
________ you meet my son in the market, ask him to come home at once.
Answer: (d)
Options (a), (c) and (b) will not convey the meaning intended. Here 'should' is used in the sense of 'If you should'; one can omit the 'If' and place 'should' first.
We shall fail ________ we are industrious.
Answer: (b)
'Unless' means 'but not if'.
You are ready to go, ________ ?
Answer: (c)
After negative statements, we use the ordinary interrogative. E.g., You are not coming, are you?
But after affirmative statements, the negative interrogative is used (as in the given question). The subject and the linking verb are to be retained as such.
Remember this about question tags: if there is an auxiliary verb in the statement, it is repeated in the question tag (He is a wonderful man, isn't he?); for verbs other than auxiliaries, the correct form of 'do' is used (He came to see me, didn't he?)
You have played a great role, for ________ your help I possibly would have landed myself in a problem.
Answer: (b)
Options (a), (c) and (d) will distort the meaning. The clue is 'great role' which obviously means that help has been given, so (b) is clearly the correct answer response.
